The article discusses the physics and applications of Andreev bound states in semiconductor nanowires, directly connecting to the goals of the AndQC project. Under special conditions, topologically protected Majorana states can also emerge in the same materials. The review collects the existing experimental and theoretical literature, and provides an excellent overview on the methodology of investigating these electronic states.
